Number of first-time unemployed meets economists' expectations
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of initial claims for jobless benefits rose slightly last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The number of Americans filing for first-time benefits was 289,000 for the week ended Aug. 28, up from a revised 285,000 the week before. The figure met expectations by economists surveyed by Reuters.
The four-week moving average, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 286,500 from a revised 284,500 the prior week.
Continued claims also climbed, rising to 2,235,000 for the week ended Aug. 21, up from a revised 2,192,000 a week earlier.
The bearish bond market, mired in concerns about interest rates, showed little response to the news. In early trading, the benchmark 30-year Treasury bond had fallen 16/32 of a point for a yield of 6.11 percent.
