MCI-Sprint, worth more than double SBC-Ameritech deal, to take No. 1 spot

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - MCI Worldcom's $129 billion purchase of Sprint, announced Tuesday, is by far the most expensive corporate acquisition to date. But it is just one in a string of transcontinental telecom takeovers in the past three years.
     According to information compiled by Thomson Financial Securities Data, the 10 biggest takeovers, excluding the MCI-Sprint deal, are:
     1. SBC Communications buys Ameritech Corp.

     6. Qwest Communications acquires US West

     7. Worldcom nabs MCI

     8. Olivetti purchases Telecom Italia
Price: $34.8 billion

     9. Bell Atlantic snags NYNEX Corp.
