NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Apple Computer Inc. made its debut in the sub-$1,000 personal computer market Tuesday with the latest version of its popular iMac computer.
The company also introduced an upgrade to its operating system software that's designed to take advantage of the Internet.
Apple's latest iMac features a clear graphite enclosure, much like the casing on the company's recently introduced Power Macintosh G4 computers.
The basic model, which features a 350 MHz PowerPC G3 processor and 64 MB of memory, is priced at $999. The iMac DV, which features a 400 MHz processor and a DVD-ROM drive -- another first for Apple -- costs $1,299.
"I'm in love with the new iMac -- it's the finest product Apple has ever created," said Steve Jobs, Apple's interim chief executive officer.
The iMac, which Apple introduced last August, has been a symbol of the company's financial turnaround over the past two years. The computer with the translucent case and glowing mouse renewed the interest of the Mac faithful and captured the interest of first-time buyers, along with Windows-based PC users.
Apple shares rose 15/16 to 65-1/2 in late-afternoon trading.
The good news couldn't have come at a better time for the Cupertino, Calif.-based firm. The new iMac introduction comes just two weeks after Apple warned Wall Street that its fourth-quarter earnings would fall far short of analysts' estimates due to a shortage of high-powered chips needed to run the new Power Macintosh G4 computers.
Along with the new iMacs, Apple also introduced Mac OS 9, the latest version of the company's Macintosh operating system. OS 9, which will be available beginning Oct. 9, features nine Internet tools, including the Sherlock 2 search engine.
OS 9 also features a tool that allow users to get Apple software updates over the Internet, as well as a Web-based file-sharing function, which enables users to share files or folders with others over the Internet.
OS 9 is priced at $99.
