Biggest PC maker cites parts shortages due to Taiwan earthquake

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Compaq Computer Corp. warned retailers Thursday that it will be unable to fill all orders for its personal computers heading into the holiday shopping season.
A company official said there would be "spot delays of shipments" on some of Compaq's consumer product lines in October and November due to delays in component supplies out of Taiwan.
Last month's earthquake left Taiwan's chip foundries without power for as much as two weeks.
The Compaq (CPQ) official pointed out, however, that the company doesn't expect the delays to have any "material impact" on its fourth-quarter financial results, adding that the component supply delays won't affect Compaq's business-model PCs or servers.
"This is not a significant shortfall. We ship millions of PCs, and we're talking about a few thousand PCs that will be affected," the Compaq official said. "This is something everyone in the industry is dealing with."
Compaq's warning comes after Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) said it expected delays in filling orders following the Taiwan earthquake.
On Wednesday, Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) said it lost one week of production of its PowerBook and iBook portable computers due to the Taiwan quake, adding that it shipped only 6,000 of its new iBooks during its fiscal fourth quarter because of Taiwan-related production delays.
Compaq shares were unchanged at 22-3/8 in morning trade.
