No. 2 vehicle maker, Net company will test car bid option in Florida
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Ford Motor Co. and priceline.com, the online auction service, will test drive a program allowing Florida residents to submit a bid for a car or truck and conduct any deal through a local Ford dealership.
The program starts Tuesday. Florida residents can visit Ford's Web site and have the option to submit an offer and payment method.
The Stamford, Conn.-based priceline.com then distributes the offer directly to local Ford dealerships, beginning with the dealership located closest to the buyer. The first dealership to accept the offer gets the sale.
If dealers cannot accept the offer, or have the vehicle in a different color or with similar option packages, dealers can electronically submit counteroffers to priceline.com.
The latest announcement is another expansion for priceline.com, which recently announced plans to get into the long distance phone market.
Shares of the Detroit-based Ford (F), the No.2 rose 1/8 to close Friday at 53-3/8, while priceline.com (PCLN) was up 3/8 to 56-5/8.
