First-time filings for state unemployment benefits up 14,000

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing first-time claims for state unemployment benefits rose to 281,000 for the week ended Dec. 18, up from a revised 267,000 the week before, a government report indicated Thursday.
The figure met economists’ forecasts, which had anticipated a rise to 281,000.
The four-week moving average, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 283,750 from a revised 282,250.
New claims have been hovering near or below the 300,000 mark since mid-January, a level consistent with a tight job market.
Continued claims rose slightly in the week ended Dec. 11, the latest data available, to 2,104,000 from a revised 2,100,000 the prior week.
