Mearkle (301) 457-2246 Nick Orsini (301) 457-2311 For information on services contact: Bureau of Economic Analysis: Technical: Christopher Bach (202) 606-9545 Media: Larry Moran (202) 606-2649 U.S. INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN GOODS AND SERVICES November 1999 Goods and Services The Bureau of the Census and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, through the Department of Commerce, announced today that total November exports of $82.9 billion and imports of $109.4 billion resulted in a goods and services deficit of $26.5 billion, $0.9 billion more than the deficit of $25.6 billion in October, revised. November exports were $0.6 billion more than October exports of $82.3 billion. November imports were $1.5 billion more than October imports of $107.9 billion. In November, the goods deficit increased $0.6 billion from October to $32.4 billion, and the services surplus decreased $0.3 billion to $5.9 billion. Exports of goods increased to $59.5 billion from $58.9 billion, and imports of goods increased to $92.0 billion from $90.7 billion. Exports of services decreased to $23.3 billion from $23.4 billion and imports of services increased to $17.4 billion from $17.2 billion. Goods The October to November change in exports of goods reflected increases in industrial supplies and materials of $0.5 billion (primarily nonmonetary gold); capital goods ($0.2 billion); and consumer goods ($0.2 billion). Decreases occurred in other goods ($0.3 billion); foods, feeds, and beverages ($0.2 billion); and automotive vehicles, parts, and engines ($0.1 billion). The October to November change in imports of goods reflected increases in automotive vehicles, parts, and engines of $0.5 billion (primarily passenger cars); capital goods ($0.3 billion); consumer goods ($0.2 billion); and foods, feeds, and beverages ($0.1 billion). Decreases occurred in other goods ($0.2 billion) and in industrial supplies and materials ($0.1 billion). Note: Total goods are reported on a balance of payments basis; commodity and country detail for goods are on a Census basis. Definitions are explained in the notes starting on page 26 of this release. Services Services exports decreased $0.1 billion from October to November. The decrease was more than accounted for by a small decrease in travel. Services imports increased $0.3 billion from October to November, reflecting small increases in nearly all categories. Goods and Services Moving Average For the three months ending in November, exports of goods and services averaged $82.4 billion, while imports of goods and services averaged $107.8 billion, resulting in an average trade deficit of $25.4 billion. For the three months ending in October, the average trade deficit was $24.6 billion, reflecting average exports of $82.2 billion and average imports of $106.7 billion. Selected Not Seasonally Adjusted Goods Details The November figures showed surpluses, in billions of dollars, with Australia $0.8 (for October $0.8), Brazil $0.2 ($0.4), Argentina $0.2 ($0.2), Egypt $0.2 ($0.2), and Hong Kong $0.2 ($0.0). Deficits were recorded, in billions of dollars, with China -$6.5 (-$7.2), Japan -$6.4 (-$7.2), Western Europe -$5.5 (-$5.0), Canada -$3.3 (-$2.9), OPEC -$2.8 (-$2.7), Mexico -$1.7 (-$1.4), Taiwan -$1.6 (-$1.1), Korea -$1.2 (-$1.0), and Singapore -$0.3 (-$0.2). Advanced technology products (ATP) exports were $16.2 billion in November and imports were $16.8 billion, resulting in a deficit of $0.6 billion. November exports were $1.2 billion less than the $17.5 billion in October, while imports were $0.1 billion more than the $16.7 billion in October. Revisions Goods carry-over in November was $1.0 billion (1.6 percent) for exports and $1.3 billion (1.4 percent) for imports. For October, revised export carry- over was $0.1 billion (0.2 percent), revised down from $1.0 billion (1.6 percent). For October, revised import carry-over was $0.1 billion (0.1 percent), revised down from $0.9 billion (1.0 percent). Services exports for October were revised up $0.2 billion to $23.4 billion. The revision was primarily attributable to travel and reflects the incorporation of updated source data. Services imports for October were virtually unrevised at $17.2 billion.
