NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Open source provider
Red Hat and International Business Machines Corp. disclosed a licensing and distribution agreement Monday for IBM's Java software for Linux components of Internet e-commerce applications.
Terms of the deal call for Red Hat (RHAT) to license and distribute IBM's (IBM) Java Runtime engine, Java Virtual Machine and the IBM Developer Kit for Linux. Red Hat also will provide technical support for users of IBM's Java Operating Systems (OS) Enterprise Edition.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Java is a programming language for the Internet. Linux is an operating system used by Internet service providers (ISPs) and competes with Sun (SUNW) Solaris and Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows, which holds the majority of market share.
Red Hat said that, according to analysts at IDC Research, it is the most popular Linux distributor, commanding a 69 percent stake among Linux users.
IBM shares closed up 2-1/2 Friday at 121-1/2 while Red Hat edged down 3/4 to 114-1/16.
