Dig yourself out of debt and start a business with some savvy planning
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: My husband needed a heart transplant and now we are totally in debt. I have a good idea for a business, but need financing. What should I do?
It's very tough to find start-up money for a new business. Your best bet is to find a private investor, or angel, as they are called. Angels are generally successful business people who have money to put into new ventures.
The best angels don't just write checks; they are willing to serve on your advisory board and help you solve problems, develop marketing strategies or make important introductions on your behalf.
No matter what kind of business you do, you should immediately join an appropriate trade or professional organization. Attend as many meetings and trade shows as you can. Introduce yourself to the leaders of the group, sit in on their seminars and volunteer to help with an event or meeting.
Show that you are committed to helping the organization, so when it's time to ask for help, people will know who you are. Raise your profile by volunteering to help at the registration desk or serve as a host in the hospitality suite.
