AOL to use Akamai servers to speed content, streaming media
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Internet content delivery provider Akamai said Wednesday that America Online will use Akamai servers across the AOL network to speed delivery of AOL content, streaming media and applications.
The companies did not disclose financial details of the pact.
Akamai technology used within the AOL network will allow AOL (AOL: Research, Estimates) to serve Internet content to its members directly from within the AOL network. It also is expected to improve the quality and reliability of large audio and video streaming contents supported by Akamai from within AOL's network.
Separately, Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai (AKAM: Research, Estimates) said it has signed 20 new companies to its Alliance Partner program. The companies include Web developers, systems integrators and Web-focused application vendors, which will work with content providers, offering services in animation, graphics, streaming media and interactivity.
On Feb. 7, Akamai announced its acquisition of streaming media firm InterVU for $2.8 billion in stock. Akamai also had one of the most successful initial public offerings in history, gaining 458 percent in October 1999.
In trading Tuesday, Akamai closed down 7-7/8 at 222-1/2, a 3.4 percent decline.
