New color handheld PC's release comes 1 week before slated IPO

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Palm Inc. unveiled the Palm IIIc Tuesday, its first color- display handheld device, just a week before the company's initial public offering.
The Palm IIIc features a 256-color display and operates on the new 3.5 version of Palm's operating system. Color handhelds previously have been launched by companies using the rival CE operating system from Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates).
In September 1999, Hewlett-Packard (HWP: Research, Estimates) introduced its HP Jornada 430se Palm-size PC with color display and about the same time, Compaq (CPQ: Research, Estimates) also released its handheld color version, the Aero 2100.
The new Palm has improved 8 megabytes memory and additional features such as a digital photo viewer, games, and a color calculator. Off-line Internet browsing will allow users to access Web content on 350 channels, but the Palm IIIc does not provide a wireless Internet connection as does the Palm VII.
On March 1, parent company 3Com (COMS: Research, Estimates) is expected to price shares of Palm in its initial public offering of 23 million shares in the $14-$16 range, estimated to bring in $345 million. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company will trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol PALM.
On Friday, 3Com closed down 2-5/16 at 69-11/16.
