E-commerce firm offers new Web site for wireless device users
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Amazon.com launched a new Internet address Monday specifically aimed at mobile phone users that will allow online shopping transactions to be conducted through wireless devices.
Consumers with Internet-enabled mobile units can access the new site to purchase products, monitor shipping status, research information and compare prices.
In December 1999, Amazon teamed with Sprint PCS Group (PCS: Research, Estimates) in a pact that allows Sprint wireless users to order Amazon products from their wireless phones. Amazon also offers shopping capabilities to Palm VII handheld computer users.
Monday's news comes on the heels of deals announced Thursday between Amazon and wireless phone makers Nokia (NOK: Research, Estimates) and Motorola (MOT: Research, Estimates). Under those alliances, Amazon's U.K. Web site was launched on mobile phones in what the company said is the first European service allowing shoppers to complete transactions from handsets without having to place a voice call, using WAP (wireless application protocol) technology.
In trading Friday, Amazon (AMZN: Research, Estimates) finished up 11/16 at 69-1/8.
