Automotive systems maker Delphi creates car docking station for Palm Pilot

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Delphi Automotive Systems and Palm Inc. have teamed up to enable Palm Pilot owners to use their devices in the car without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road.
Troy, Mich.-based Delphi (DPH: Research, Estimates) introduced a prototype of its Communiport Mobile Productivity Center on Tuesday.
David Wohleen, president of Delphi's Mobile Media Business told CNNfn the device will allow drivers to use their Palm Pilots through voice interaction and ask their machine to download and read text, such as stock quotes or e-mail, back to them. (378K WAV or 378K AIFF)
The device will initially be sold through retail channels and next-generation units will be available in the automotive aftermarket.
According to Wohleen, the device will be very simple to install in any automobile. (257K WAV or 257K AIFF)
Although the device is the creation of two spin-offs, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Palm (PALM: Research, Estimates) from 3Com and Delphi from General Motors, Wohleen said there were no immediate plans to spin off Communiport.
"Right now our focus is on develop the product, create the market, develop these kinds of opportunities for consumers and be able to be a leader in the marketplace," Wohleen said.
