Don't build one from scratch; first get experience working for someone else

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: I'm a retired teacher who wants to set up a travel business in my home in Canada. What do you think?
The travel and leisure industry is booming along with the strong economy, but I urge you not to set up a travel business from scratch. It's expensive and you will face formidable competition. Instead, I would suggest you sign up for a training program, learn the business and apply for a job with a local firm that will allow you to work at home -- at least part of the time.
My cousin works this way and she loves it. She has a challenging job that's never boring, and flexible hours that allow her to be at home when her teen-age son and his friends require supervision.
Many travel agencies today have begun to specialize in serving certain groups of travelers. Once you learn the basic computer and booking skills, decide whether you want to help families heading off on their vacations, corporate travelers, or retirees who love to take cruises.
