When you have to do it for a living, it might not be as much fun any more

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: My husband loves bonsai plants and wants to start a business selling them. What do you think?
Turning your hobby into a business is attractive, but it has its challenges. I would suggest that he start small by offering a few trees to a plant maintenance company or a few local florists. He should be able to ask them if they would be willing to add bonsai plants to their product mix.
I would think bonsai would be the perfect office plant -- attractive, unusual and small. Many people are afraid of killing plants and may welcome a great office plant that comes with its own maintenance person.
He can offer to work on consignment, which means he gets paid only when a tree is leased or sold to a customer. Most retailers and service providers are willing to try something new if they won't lose any money if things just don't work out.
He also should speak with the folks he buys his plants and supplies from. They may be looking for a new sales person or part-time help. The only problem with turning your hobby into a business is that it may not be as enjoyable as it was when you did it just for fun.
