Midwest Sausage says franks sold in Michigan, Chicago may be diseased
|
WASHINGTON (CNNfn) - Midwest Sausage Corp. is recalling about 2,800 pounds of franks that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday.
The products being recalled were distributed to grocers in Michigan and the Chicago area. They have a "sell-by" date of 7/16/00 on the label, and all package labels bear "Est. 10216" inside the USDA seal of inspection. These products are Blue Ribbon brand beef franks in two-and-a-half-pound packages, Dutch Brand Natural Casing Hot Franks in five-pound packages and Associated Food Distributors brand beef hot dogs in two-pound packages.
The FSIS asked consumers to return these products to the store at which they were purchased.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems --infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease, HIV infection, or in chemotherapy.
FSIS has received no reports of illness associated with consumption of Midwest Sausage franks.
Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Howard Weinberger, president of the Hamtramck, Mich.-based Midwest Sausage Corp., at (313) 875-8183.
