NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Andrew Sukawaty, president and chief operating officer of Sprint Corp.'s Sprint PCS wireless communications unit, said Friday he plans to leave the company to pursue "a new opportunity."
Ronald LeMay, president and chief operating officer of Westwood, Kan.-based Sprint (FON: Research, Estimates), the No. 3 telecommunications and long-distance company, will succeed Sukawaty on an interim basis.
"Andy Sukawaty is a talented leader and has directed a team that has made Sprint PCS the premier wireless provider in the country," said LeMay.
Sukawaty, 44, will act as a consultant to LeMay over the next month to assist in the transition process before he leaves the company.
"This is the fourth start-up venture in which I've been involved and it definitely has been one of my most rewarding experiences," Sukawaty said. "It's been an honor to lead the group of talented professionals we've assembled at Sprint PCS, and to work with the experienced and knowledgeable team at Sprint."
Sukawaty said he would provide more information about his new opportunity at a later date.
Sukawaty joined Sprint PCS (PCS: Research, Estimates) as chief executive officer in 1996. Before Sprint PCS, Sukawaty was chief executive officer at NTL Ltd.
In April, Sprint PCS reported that it narrowly beat expectations when it posted a first-quarter loss from continuing operations of $492 million, or 56 cents per share, compared with a loss of $605 million, or 71 cents per share, a year earlier. Analysts were projecting a loss of 58 cents.
In addition to growing its subscriber base by more than 12 percent, Sprint PCS nearly doubled net operating revenue to $1.18 billion during the quarter.
Shares of Sprint PCS closed up 1 at 63-7/16 at the close of trade Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.
