Wireless provider licenses CDMA technology for Handspring's Visor
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Extending its wireless technology to handheld computers, Qualcomm said Wednesday it is licensing its technology to Handspring personal devices.
The royalty-producing agreement between the companies allows Handspring (HAND: Research, Estimates) to develop wireless products for its handheld Visor computer through the use of Qualcomm's (QCOM: Research, Estimates) CDMA (code division multiple access) technology and patents commonly used in cellular phones.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Over time, all handheld computing products will become wirelessly enabled, and Qualcomm's CDMA technology provides a great path for enabling these solutions," Ed Colligan, senior vice president at Handspring, said.
Handspring's Visor uses competitor Palm's (PALM: Research, Estimates) operating system, which allows it to share information between Visor and other Palm-based computers, and run Palm OS-based software programs.
Visor uses the Springboard expansion slot that lets users add modules for additional features such as an MP3 player, digital camera and universal remote.
In trading Tuesday, Handsping closed up 7/8 to 33-3/8, and Qualcomm finished down 2-1/2 at 61-1/16.
