NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Nothing is worse than calling a company that never changes or updates its voicemail message.
It only takes a few minutes to change the message. Use your greeting to promote a new product or share some quick industry news.
If you work on your own, update the message daily. Let callers know whether or not you are in the office and when to expect a call back.
Here are more tips to make the most of your voicemail system:
- Check your messages frequently and return all calls within 24 hours. Unreturned calls often mean lost business.
- Smile when you're talking on the phone. It really perks up your tone of voice.
- Inquire about adding broadcast distribution to your voice mail service; it allows you to relay one message to several employees at once.
- Look into remote notification and pager notification, which helps you avoid missing important calls.
- Add guest mailboxes to your phone system. These can be assigned to visitors or temporary employees.
- Ask your voicemail provider about message redirect service, which allows you to forward messages to others in your office.
