Goods
and Services Deficit Increases in July 2000
The
Nation's international deficit in goods and services increased to
$31.9 billion in July, from $29.8 billion (revised) in June, as
exports decreased and imports
increased.
Goods and Services
- Exports
decreased to $89.7 billion from $91.0 billion in June. Goods
were $65.0 billion in July, down from $66.5 billion in June, and
services were $24.7 billion in July, up from $24.5 billion in
June.
- Imports
increased to $121.6 billion from $120.8 billion in June. Goods
were $103.7 billion in July, up from $103.3 billion in June, and
services were $17.9 billion in July, up from $17.5 billion in
June.
- For
goods, the deficit was $38.7 billion in July, up from $36.9
billion in June. For services, the surplus was $6.8 billion in
July, down from $7.0 billion in June.
Goods by Category
- The
change in exports of goods reflected decreases in automotive
vehicles, parts, and engines; other goods; capital goods;
industrial supplies and materials; and consumer
goods. Foods, feeds, and beverages were virtually
unchanged.
- The
change in imports of goods reflected increases in industrial
supplies and materials (primarily crude oil and natural
gas); automotive vehicles, parts, and engines; and
foods, feeds, and beverages. Decreases occurred in
capital goods and consumer goods. Other goods were
virtually unchanged.
Goods by Geographic Area (Not Seasonally Adjusted)
- The
goods deficit with Canada increased from $4.1 billion in June to
$4.7 billion in July. Exports decreased $4.1 billion (primarily
automobiles and automobile parts and power generating machinery)
to $11.9 billion, while imports decreased $3.5 billion
(primarily automobiles and automobile parts and
telecommunications equipment) to $16.7 billion.
- The
goods deficit with China increased from $7.2 billion in June to
$7.6 billion in July. Exports increased $0.3 billion (primarily
transport equipment) to $1.6 billion, while imports increased
$0.7 billion (primarily toys, games, and sporting goods and
articles of apparel and clothing) to $9.3 billion.
- The
goods deficit with Western Europe increased from $4.3 billion in
June to $7.2 billion in July. Exports decreased $2.2 billion
(primarily transport equipment and artwork and antiques) to
$13.2 billion, while imports increased $0.7 billion (primarily
petroleum products and pharmaceutical products) to $20.4
billion.
