First-time filings for state unemployment benefits decline in latest week

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell to 308,000 last week from a revised 326,000 the prior week, the government reported Thursday.
Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 315,000 for the period.
However, the four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, fell to 315,750 in the week ended Sept. 16 from a revised 319,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said.
Continued claims fell to 2,185,000 for the Sept. 9 week, the latest data available, from a revised 2,229,000 in the prior period.
Missouri reported it had more layoffs in the transportation industry. Minnesota reported it had fewer layoffs in the automobile industry, while Texas reported fewer layoffs in the non-electrical machinery and service industries. Pennsylvania also cited fewer layoffs in the trade, service and transportation industries.
