$1B 5-year deal covers technology, services for SBC network expansion

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Lucent Technologies said Thursday it won a $1 billion, 5-year contract from SBC Communications to supply technology services as SBC expands its network across the U.S.
Lucent will provide networking equipment, software and infrastructure services to SBC as it enters 30 markets throughout the country this year and 30 additional markets next year.
SBC will offer residential and business customers local, long- distance, Internet and high-speed data services, and said it aims to reach as many as 180 million customers, or two-thirds of the nation's population through its network.
SBC already offers limited high-speed services to customers in Baltimore; Boston; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Miami; Seattle; New York: and Washington, D.C., and expects to roll out full service in those areas later this fall.
In Wednesday trade, shares of Lucent (LU: Research, Estimates) finished up $2.88, or 9.6 percent, to $32.94, while shares of SBC (SBC: Research, Estimates) closed up $1.81, or 3.6 percent, to $51.75.
