Computer maker targets weak sales with rebates on PowerBooks, Cubes
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - In a move to offset sluggish computer sales, Apple Computer is offering rebates on several of its products, according to a report Friday.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker is offering a $200 rebate on purchases of its PowerBook laptop series and a $300 rebate on Power Mac G4 Cube computers, the Wall Street Journal said. Both rebate plans begin Friday and expire on Oct. 31.
The rebate initiative comes two weeks after Apple (AAPL: Research, Estimates) warned that fiscal fourth-quarter earnings will be lower than expected; the company reports Wednesday.
Analysts contacted by the Journal had mixed reactions as to whether the rebates will spur sales. "It's aggressive and it's imaginative, but how materials will it be? It's hard to say," UBS Warburg analyst Charlie Wold told the paper.
