Want ad helps sell your company to candidate; job description is valuable tool

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Hiring a great employee shouldn't just be a matter of luck.
In their book "Small Business for Dummies," Eric Tyson and Jim Schell describe some steps you can take to increase your odds of building a first-rate staff.
- Write a help-wanted ad that emphasizes the advantages of working at your company. Remember, "you are selling an opportunity, not (just) offering a job."
- Encourage current employees to refer qualified candidates. Offer a reward for successful referrals -- anything from extra vacation days to a cash bonus.
- Before interviewing a candidate, prepare a thorough job description. "Good applicants want to know exactly what the job entails," note the authors. During the interview, look for a candidate's ability to listen well. This is indicative of whether he or she will bring that quality to the job.
