Sales of new one-family houses in September 2000 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 946,000 according to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 9 (+/-9) percent above the revised August rate of 866,000 and 12 (+/-10) percent above the September 1999 rate of 848,000.
The median sales price of new houses sold in September 2000 was $165,200; the mean sales price was $202,000. At the end of September, the seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses for sale was 302,000. This represents a supply of 3.9 months at the current sales rate.
Through September of this year, there were 707,000 houses sold compared with 716,000 sold during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 1 (+/-3) percent.
