NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Once dowdy and dull, Burberry has been transformed into a fashion icon. The turnaround has transformed the company's profitability, too.

The distinctive Burberry check is one of the hottest fashion icons on the market. But just three years ago, Burberry had run out of steam. Then Rose Marie Bravo, from Saks Fifth Avenue, took over as CEO and kick-started the brand. Now the parent company, Great Universal Stores, is rumored to be selling around 15 percent of Burberry, a move that could raise as much as $1.4 billion.
