NEW YORK (BNamericas.com) - Online recruitment service Jobshark launched operations in Brazil, Cisco Systems' chairman signed a committal letter with Chile's President Ricardo Lagos to implement an e-learning solution, and Mexico's long-distance operator Alestra said it plans to spend $30 million to create a Web hosting service.
Canada's Jobshark begins Brazil operations
Canada's online recruitment service Jobshark began operations in Brazil Thursday as part of its regional expansion plan, marketing and communications director Mauricio Reyes confirmed to BNamericas.com.
Reyes would not reveal the amount invested in the Brazilian operations, but said the company would continue expansion into Uruguay and Venezuela in December and into Spain in the first quarter of 2001. The company is also eyeing the Central American and Caribbean market, he said, without disclosing details.
Jobshark works with Miami-based portal El Sitio, and uses its infrastructure to expand into new markets, which "practically make us the exclusive recruitment channel for El Sitio," Reyes said.
Jobshark joined forces with El Sitio and Britain's human resources consultants Mast Americas to launch Jobshark Ibero-America in September this year. El Sitio operates country-specific sites for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, the United States and Uruguay.
Cisco pledges e-learning solution in Chile
John Chambers, chairman of networking giant Cisco Systems, signed a committal letter Wednesday with Chile's President Ricardo Lagos to implement an e-learning solution in the country through its Cisco Learning Institute (CLI) unit.
Under the agreement, CLI would also train Chilean government-designated trainers and take two representatives of the country's Education Ministry on a tour of its education and training divisions in San Jose, Calif.
The Cisco agreement signing is part of Lagos' two-day technology visit to Silicon Valley. He and a 100-member delegation also visited Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates), Oracle Corp. (ORCL: Research, Estimates), Global Crossing (GX: Research, Estimates), Hewlett Packard (HWP: Research, Estimates) and Sun Microsystems (SUNW: Research, Estimates).
Alestra to invest $30M in Web hosting service
Mexican long-distance operator Alestra plans to invest $30 million to create a Web hosting service, which will include various e-commerce applications, La Reforma (Mexico).
Alestra expects to attract 5,000 local businesses within the first year of operations, and expects these clients to save 80 to 90 percent of the hosting costs they currently incur with Web hosting companies in the United States, Alestra service development director Gerardo Barragan said.
This month Alestra inaugurated an Internet Data Center in Guadalajara and plans to open two more in Mexico City and Monterrey.
Mexican consortium Onexa controls Alestra with a 51-percent stake, while telecom giant AT&T (T: Research, Estimates) holds the remaining 49 percent.
