Name: Shafee, Texas
Question: AOL (AOL: Research, Estimates). Nortel Networks (NT: Research, Estimates). Texas Instruments (TXN: Research, Estimates). With the AOL-Time Warner merger almost complete, why is the AOL stock weakening? What are your views on NT and TXN for the next six-to-12 months?
Answer: AOL stock is weakening, reflecting the fact that they are merging with a slower growing company; therefore their overall growth rate in the future will be slightly lower than it has in the past. The price of the stock is reflecting that slower growth. We like both NT and TXN for the next six-to-12 months. NT will continue to benefit from the capital expenditures necessary to build out the telecom sector. TXN specifically will benefit from their production of semiconductor chips for specialized products such as DVD players. [Ed. Note: Time Warner is the parent company of CNNfn.]
Name: Denise, Arizona
Question: Etoys (ETYS: Research, Estimates). If this company is sold what happens to my investment with them? Would the new company honor the stocks?
Answer: If eToys is sold, two things could happen: the new company could purchase your stock for cash, or you could receive shares in the new company.
Name: David (location unknown)
Question: The Nasdaq tested new lows. Does that mean it will bounce back again even though the economy is slowing down ?
Answer: You probably will see a short-term bounce but then the market could move sideways to down as it digests slowing earnings in the slower economic environment. There's no guarantee that the market will go straight back up, and you need to be positioned in stocks that are more defensive for a slower growth environment.
Name: Peter, Slovak Republic
Question: Could Greenspan's decision not to cut interest rates signal that he awaits further price correction in the stock market?
Answer: The decision not to cut rates is probably related more towards his desire to see further economic news following the Christmas selling season. While he has focused on the stock market in the past, it is not his key indicator for monetary policy.
