Web retail traffic numbers far outpacing last year's; Amazon ranked No. 1

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Traditional retailers may be crying in their Christmas stockings over disappointing sales in the holiday season, but online merchants saw tremendous gains in their Web site traffic, according to a report released Friday.
Internet research and tracking firm Media Metrix said 34.3 million unique visitors went to retail sites each week of the 2000 holiday season. That's 30.3 percent more than in the same period a year ago and far beyond the Web's overall growth of 18.6 percent for the previous year, the report said.
However, the report does not measure online holiday sales. Most traditional brick-and-mortar retailers reported much lower sales in December compared with a year ago because of a slowing economy, high fuel prices and severe weather.
Despite disappointing store sales, brick-and-mortar retailers still surpassed Web retailers in terms of traffic, according to Media Metrix.
Amazon.com ranked as the top site, racking up the most traffic in the five-week holiday season for the second year in a row, with a 47.8 percent increase.
Walmart.com, the Web site of the No. 1 U.S. retailer, was the top-gaining retail site with a 640 percent increase in traffic compared with last year.
