Retailer to sell Eddie Bauer-licensed camping gear in stores and online
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Target Corp., the No. 3 U.S. discount retailer, will begin selling licensed Eddie Bauer camping equipment at its stores, following in the steps of other discounters that have successfully boosted profitability with name-brand licenses.
Under terms of the agreement announced Monday, Target (TGT: Research, Estimates) will distribute the camping gear during all of 2001. The camping line is manufactured by American Recreation Products, which will also market and design products bearing the Eddie Bauer name.
Items, which will also be sold online, include tents, sleeping bags, rain gear, camp furniture and other accessories.
"Forming a distribution relationship with Eddie Bauer allows us to expand our outdoor sports department with one of the most recognized and trusted brands in the active, casual lifestyle industry," Target Stores President Gregg Steinhafel said.
Target is the latest discount chain to look for success in well-known licensed brands. Kmart's (KM: Research, Estimates) Martha Stewart line of home products has been successful for the company.
Shares of Target soared $2.81, or 8.5 percent, to $35.56 in trading Monday.
