NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Apple Computer Inc. is suspending production of its Power Mac G4 Cube due to lack of demand for the smaller computer.

Apple (AAPL: Research, Estimates) said Tuesday most customers have opted for the more powerful Power Mac G4 minitower rather than the cube, which is one-fourth the size of most personal computers.

Apple's G4 Cube is on the way out
"Cube owners love their Cubes, but most customers decided to buy our powerful Power Mac G4 minitowers instead," said Philip Schiller, Apple vice president of worldwide product marketing, in a statement.

Apple unveiled the Cube almost a year ago at the MacWorld trade show, calling it "a supercomputer miraculously engineered into an eight-inch cube, suspended in a stunning crystal-clear enclosure." But sales of the Cube were far lower than what the company anticipated.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company said they may release an upgraded model of the G4 Cube, but no plans are currently in the works.

Shares of Apple fell 6 cents to $23.84 Tuesday. graphic
