NEW YORK (CNNfn) - American Home Products recalled two lots of hormone replacement drug Premarin which did not meet quality standards.

A spokesman for AHP (AHP: down $0.27 to $56.23, Research, Estimates) said Tuesday more than 2,000, each containing 5,000 tablets, will be recalled. Premarin is the second-most prescribed drug in the United States.

AHP said its recall does not affect retailers or women who already have the product at home.

The spokesman said the recall "has nothing to do with the safety of efficacy of Premarin."

According to AHP, a 1998 change in regulatory specifications governing drug dissolution led to the recall. The company now has found two lots of Premarin that don't meet the new specifications. The first lot affects 896 bottles and the second lot affects 1,174 bottles, each with 5,000 tablets.

Premarin, derived in part from the urine of pregnant horses, has sparked protest from animal rights activists. The drug generated $428 million in sales in the second quarter.  graphic
