NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - IBM plans to cut about 1,000 jobs from its Microelectronics chip division, though affected workers will be able to look for other jobs at IBM, the company said Wednesday.
"We are making roughly 1,000 layoffs, but those people will have other opportunities at IBM, meaning they can look at other jobs within the company," an IBM spokeswoman told CNNfn.
"Layoffs are across the United States and across all levels, management to non-management," she added.
A report in Wednesday's online version of the Wall Street Journal said the cuts most likely will affect chipmaking plants in Burlington, Vt., and Endicott and Fishkill, N.Y.
Shares of Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM (IBM: down $0.65 to $113.55, Research, Estimates), which employs about 316,000 people globally, fell in early trading Wednesday.
