NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - If you're planning to refinance your mortgage, you're probably making a smart move. You can save thousands of dollars, especially if you stay in your home for a long time. But before you head to your lender, make sure you have your financial records ready.
The documentation you need will vary depending on your lender, what kind of loan you're getting, and your specific circumstances as a borrower. "It really depends upon the status of the mortgage buyer, whether they're refinancing with their current lender, with a new lender, or making an outright purchase," said Kevin Horn, a spokesperson for Washington Mutual.
"Some loan programs also allow for streamlined refinancing, which usually has minimal documentation requirements," said Tina Haskell Summers, a spokesperson for the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.
Though you can't know exact requirements in advance, the list below shows some of the documents you may need to refinance your mortgage loan.
