BEND, Ore. (CNN/Money) - If you haven't made plans for Memorial Day, it's still not too late to come up with an escape plan. American and United are giving travelers until the end of the day Friday to nab reduced fares.

Of course, some of the best deals come to those who wait, and consume a lot of cereal. Eat a mere 250 boxes of Cracklin' Oat Bran and you've got yourself a free flight anywhere in the contiguous United States.

With the first big weekend of summer travel only one week away, just about every airline has rolled out some sort of last-minute Memorial Day special.

Log onto American Airlines and buy your ticket by midnight Friday -- May 17th -- and you can get away next weekend for a song. The deals, which are listed under Net SAAver and Special Offers include $79 round-trip tickets between Los Angeles and Reno, $119 tickets between Chicago and Washington D.C. and $169 tickets from Dallas to Portland. One catch is that you will have to depart late on Friday or on Saturday and return on Monday or Tuesday.

United Airlines also has its own last-minute deals. Select your departure city and see where you can go cheaply. Windy City passengers, for example, can visit Seattle for $169 or jump over to Minneapolis for $104. Again, you must book your departure by midnight on Friday, May 17, departing Saturday May 18th, and you must return on Monday or Tuesday.

Rail sale ends Sunday

If you'd like to avoid traffic jams and long lines at the airport, consider traveling by train. Buy Amtrak tickets by May 19th -- this Sunday -- and can get 30 percent off regular adult fares and 50 percent off tickets for kids under 15. Tickets must be purchased seven days in advanced, while the offer is good for travel through June 15th. As with any good deal, there are caveats. For example, the discount is not good for travel during peak times in the Northeast corridor.

Go south, way south, to beat the summer heat

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere officially begins in June. But if you don't mind the cooler temperatures, you can take advantage of some excellent travel deals to Australia and New Zealand through Discover Wholesale Travel.

Or, take the family on a different kind of road trip and fly from L.A. to Auckland and spend 13 days exploring New Zealand's north and south islands in a motorhome. The package is based on a family of four and priced at $907 per person.

As an added bonus, the strong U.S. dollar has about twice the purchasing power of the Australian and Kiwi dollars.

Or, go north to Montreal

Montreal feels as if it's thousands of miles away from anywhere in America. Yet it's just a short flight from most U.S. cities. From now until June 15 you can fly to Montreal and stay 3 nights in the four-star Queen Elizabeth hotel for $409 per person from New York, $479 from Atlanta and $535 from Chicago. The special is available through Liberty Travel and good for several departure cities as long as you book before June 7.

Miles...now a part of this nutritious breakfast

You probably know that you can earn frequent flier earn miles just about every time you open your wallet. Now you can earn miles every time you open your mouth and take in your daily dose of fiber. Kellogg's and American Airlines are now awarding 100 miles for every box of All-Bran and Mini-Wheats you consume. Awards must be redeemed in 1,000-mile increments and are available when you buy one of ten different grown-up cereals.  Top of page
