NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
Intel said Monday it began shipping its new Itanium(R) 2 processors and plans to make related software and services available by the end of the quarter.
The new chip is the second in Intel's Itanium line for enterprise operating systems and workstations most widely used for business intelligence, databases, enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, high-performance computing, computer-aided engineering and secure transactions.
"Intel and the industry are making great progress building enterprise solutions for the Itanium 2 processor," said Mike Fister, senior vice president and general manager for Intel's Enterprise Platforms Group.
Intel said it has designs for five more Itanium chips under way, the releases of which will span into the second half of the decade.
IBM, BEA Systems, Oracle, Microsoft and i2 are among the companies planning to use the new chip, which will cost from $1,338 to $4,226.
Shares of Intel (INTC: Research, Estimates) rose $1.79 to $19.54 Friday.
