NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
Intel Corp.'s Craig Barrett is among the latest CEOs to certify their companies' financial statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to the commission's Web site checklist.
With Wednesday's deadline for certification approaching, 147 of approximately 700 CEOs required to vouch for their companies' financial statements have done so, according to the checklist as updated at 8:45 a.m. ET Monday. An SEC spokesman says other corporate executives may have filed their certifications, but they have not been reviewed by SEC staff and entered into the online list.
The spokesman also says companies can request an automatic five-day extension on Aug. 15 if they don't meet the filing deadline.
Among the companies joining Intel in the most recent batch of CEO certifications are American International Group Inc., Boise Cascade Corp., Union Pacific Corp., and Wyeth.
Intel becomes the seventh Dow Jones industrial average component whose CEO has certified results. The others are Alcoa Inc. (AA: Research, Estimates), Citigroup Inc. (C: Research, Estimates); Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM: Research, Estimates), General Electric Co., (GE: Research, Estimates) Honeywell International Inc. (HON: Research, Estimates) and United Technologies Corp. (UTX: Research, Estimates)
Besides the 145 companies with Aug. 14 deadlines whose CEOs have certified results, 14 CEOs whose companies have deadlines after Aug. 14 have filed their certifications, according to the SEC Web site. These companies include Intel, whose certification wasn't due until Nov. 12, as well as 3Com Corp. (COMS: Research, Estimates), Federal Express Corp. (FDX: Research, Estimates), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS: Research, Estimates) and Oracle Corp. (ORCL: Research, Estimates)
The SEC began requiring the certifications in the wake of the corporate accounting scandals that have wracked Wall Street in the last year.
