NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Hair today, gone from the stores tomorrow?
The nation's retailers say Barbie as Rapunzel, the amply-haired fairy tale princess, will be the best-selling toy overall this year, according to a survey released Tuesday at PlayDate 2002, an industry trade show held in New York.
The latest incarnation of Mattel's popular doll has her dressed as the fairy tale princess, complete with a foot of overgrown hair. Mattel produced the doll as a tie-in with a new movie based on the character.
Your kids will also want anything to do with Dora the Explorer, Disney Princesses, Spider-Man and SpongeBob SquarePants, among others.

Sony's PlayStation 2 tops the list for best selling video game hardware, while Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, by Rockstar Games, will be the most popular video game, according to the survey.
PlayDate is the brainchild of toy industry analysts Sean McGowan and Jon Salisbury, and is intended as a way for retailers and manufacturers to showcase the newest toys to the media.
Many of the toys that made the list are high on technology, but not as flashy as a few years ago. Others are decidedly low-tech. There is a definite emphasis on letting children direct the play, McGowan said.
"If you can capture the imagination, the attention of the child, it doesn't matter what the technology is," McGowan said.

Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards from Upper Deck have apparently picked up where Pokemon left off, and anything with Spider-Man's name on it is sure to snag kids, according to the PlayDate survey.
Retro toys are also big this year, as manufacturers hope to cash in on mom and dad's nostalgia over such things as the Care Bears, Magic 8-Ball, Uno card game, and the Ant Farm are all finding new life on store shelves.
Retailers, who have been struggling with lower sales all year due mainly to economic jitters, depend on the holiday season of November and December for at least half of their sales and profits for the entire year. Though consumers have been spending less at the stores, chances are they're not going to deny their kids at the holidays, industry analysts have said.
"Toy industry sales are running flat with a year ago, but that's not a surprise," McGowan said. "This is not a growth business."

Many manufacturers and retailers attending the show said they still had plenty of inventory jammed up at West Coast ports due to the recent lockout, which ended when President Bush intervened. Most said they had enough toys to start the holidays, but whether they'll be able to keep the shelves stocked remains a question.
Other toys that made PlayDate's overall best-seller list include the Bratz Funk 'n' Glow playset from MGA Entertainment, Disney Toddler Princesses by Playmates, Dora the Explorer dolls by Mattel's Fisher-Price division, Harry Potter: Basilisk Playset, also from Mattel, the LeapPad Learning System from Leap Frog, Rescue Heroes action dolls from Fisher-Price, Spider-Man: Dual Action Web Blaster by Toy Biz, Star Wars Lightsabers by Hasbro, and Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Cards from Upper Deck.
