Street Talk: Intel cut
CSFB, Merrill lower estimates for No. 1 chipmaker; electronics retailer Radio Shack raised.
January 15, 2003: 7:21 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Two firms lowered estimates for Intel early Wednesday, a day after the world's No. 1 chipmaker reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings but gave a cautious early outlook for 2003.

In a morning note, Credit Suisse First Boston cut its 2003 profit forecast for Intel (INTC: Research, Estimates) by a penny to 59 cents a share and Merrill Lynch lowered its 2004 earnings estimate for Intel to 87 cents a share from 91 cents after the world's No. 1 chipmaker topped analysts' estimates for the fourth quarter -- and announced a reduction in capital spending and profit margin estimates below what analysts had been expecting.

CSFB upgraded Radio Shack (RSH: Research, Estimates) to "neutral" from "underperform," citing less downside to holiday sales than in previous years. Shares of the electronics retailer rose $1.02 to $21.93 Tuesday.

Credit Suisse raised its 2003 earnings estimate for industrial components maker Precision Castparts (PCP: Research, Estimates) to $2.95 a share from $2.85, citing better-than-expected fiscal third quarter results. Shares of Precision Castparts rose $1.46 to $28.12 Tuesday.

Merrill Lynch increased its 2003 earnings estimate for AmSouth Bancorp (ASO: Research, Estimates) to $1.75 a share from $1.70, citing shares repurchase, more stable net interest margin and deposit growth. Shares of AmSouth rose 89 cents to $20.98 Tuesday.

Merrill also lowered its fourth-quarter estimates on FelCor Lodging (FCH: Research, Estimates) to 13 cents a share from 18 cents, citing an unexpectedly weak food and beverage business in December and deteriorating margins. Shares of the hotel real estate investment trust rose 30 cents to $11.85 Tuesday.

Lehman Brothers initiated coverage of Pixar Animation Studios (PIXR: Research, Estimates) with an "underweight" rating, saying that the stock already reflected the continued outperformance of Pixar films. Shares of Pixar gained 14 cents to $56.52 Tuesday.

Lehman also upgraded battery maker Rayovac (ROV: Research, Estimates) to "overweight" from "equal-weight," citing its valuation. Shares of Rayovac gained 42 cents to $13.54 Tuesday.  Top of page
