NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
Is there such a thing as "wholesome" snacks? That's the moniker food manufacturer Kraft Foods is using for its soon-to-be launched new line of 100 percent whole-grain crackers, chocolate-chip cookies and Fig Newtons.
Kraft (Research), the No. 1 food company, unveiled the new products Thursday at a summit on health, nutrition and obesity in Sacramento, Calif.
The whole-grain cookies contain zero grams of trans fat per serving and will launch under Kraft's Nabisco snacks brand at stores nationwide this month, the company said.
The three new products include Wheat Thins crackers, Fig Newtons cookies and whole-grain Chips Ahoy!
"We're taking steps that are responsive to societal concerns, while at the same time driving our business results by transforming our portfolio to better align with consumer trends," Kraft CEO Roger Deromedi said in a statement.
Separately, chocolate manufacturer Mars, Inc.'s Masterfoods division will roll out a new line of cocoa-based snacks called "CocoaVia" that it claims will "significantly reduce" bad cholesterol, promote healthy circulation and protect against heart disease.
The company said the new products contain a patented blend of "heart-healthy" cocoa flavanols -- which are naturally-occurring plant compounds -- and cholesterol-lowering plant compounds found in soy.
Additionally, each new snack will contain calcium, folic acid and other vitamins.
The first versions of CocoaVia bars will come in three flavors -- plain, crispy and blueberry & almond and chocolate-covered almonds -- and will be available in stores including Walgreens and Target nationwide in October.
