Tech crime gets personal at Ford
Company says computer with names and Soc. Sec. numbers of 70,000 workers has been stolen.
December 22, 2005: 11:39 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - A computer with files that have the names and Social Security numbers of approximately 70,000 current and former employees of Ford Motor Company was stolen, the company reported.

An investigation into the theft -- which is believed to have occurred in late November -- is ongoing, and Ford has notified the FBI, Secret Service and Federal Identity Theft Task Force.

Ford also alerted the three major credit rating agencies.

Ford says it has no evidence that the information has been used for identity theft. The car maker has told employees whose information was in the computer, and it has offered to pay for credit-monitoring services.

"We sincerely regret any concern or inconvenience that this theft has caused our employees," Ford said in a statement.

"Ford takes seriously the protection of the personal information of its employees and will continue to take ... steps to safeguard it."

2005 saw several major identity information breaches, including the theft of 40 million credit card numbers from CardSystems Solutions. (Full story)
