Energy labels coming to TVs in 2011

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- All new televisions will soon include labels that estimate the TV's annual energy cost, and compare its consumption to that of other models, the Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday.

The rule will go into effect for all TVs made after May 10, 2011. The requirement is an expansion of the FTC's appliance labeling rule, which previously applied to other consumer electronics like washing machines and refrigerators.

The FTC expanded the EnergyGuide rules to help consumers make better-informed decisions as competition in the TV market heats up, FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a statement.

"Unlike many years ago, before flat screens and plasma, today's televisions vary widely in the amount of energy they use," Leibowitz said.

The black-and-yellow labels must be visible from the front of the device.

Online retailers that sell TVs will also be required to display a full image of the EnergyGuide label for each model, starting July 11, 2011.

The FTC started the EnergyGuide label program in 2007. The commission said it voted 5-0 to expand the rules to TVs. To top of page
