NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is leaving the company to start her own venture.

"Randi has decided to leave Facebook to start her own company. We are all grateful for her important service," the company told CNNMoney Wednesday.

Zuckerberg, who served as director of marketing at Facebook for six years, helped break down the barriers between traditional media and social networking, headlining projects and partnerships with media companies and worldwide events.

She also helped the company launch Facebook Live, the company's live video streaming channel.

"I have spent my years at Facebook pouring my heart and soul into innovating and pushing the media industry forward by introducing new concepts around live, social, participatory viewing that the media industry has since adopted," Zuckerberg said in a resignation letter posted on AllThingsD, the technology blog that initially broke the news.

Zuckerberg will use that experience in her new venture -- a social media firm that will work with media companies to develop social strategies.

"My goal is to launch my own innovative programming and work with media companies to develop their programming in new, and more social ways," Zuckerberg wrote.

And although the Facebook founder's sister is leaving the company, she's far from deserting the social media giant.

"Facebook will clearly be a central element in all my projects," she wrote. "I plan to demonstrate that ANYONE can do groundbreaking media work in the platform."  To top of page
