AT&T antitrust suit boosts Sprint

August 31, 2011: 2:11 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The U.S. government is seeking to stop AT&T's $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile, claiming that the deal would "substantially lessen competition" in the wireless industry.

If the transaction is ultimately rejected, AT&T (T, Fortune 500) might be charged more than $6 billion. Shares of the country's largest mobile carrier fell 4% on the news.

One of the beneficiaries would be Sprint Nextel (S, Fortune 500), whose shares advanced more than 6% Wednesday. Stocks of the other mobile carriers --Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) and Leap International (LEAP) -- were slightly down.

Also on Wednesday, Ford (F, Fortune 500) announced a partnership with the car-sharing service Zipcar (ZIP). The second-biggest U.S. auto manufacturer agreed to supply up to 1,000 vehicles to over 250 Zipcar locations on U.S. college and university campuses.

These are among the interesting discussions on StockTwits Wednesday:

AronPinson: What was the $T break fee again: $3 Bil in cash, $2 Bil worth of spectrum, & $1 Bil roaming agreement.

CDMCapital: Think the $T block was pretty obvious as they would control most of the mobile market in tandem with $VZ. Wld have raised PX's.

Mdhemp: If $T can't buy T-mobile, there are smaller co's that should pass muster, like $LEAP.

fromedome: Sprint will be happy with Feds' move to block AT&T-Mobile, but Sprint still needs to figure out its own problems. $S

EddyElfenbein: Great news! Sprint/Nextel is up 7% today!!! In other words, it's gone from being down 87% to now down only 86%. $$ $S

chicagosean: As a $ZIP member, happy to see the news of $F cars being added to the lineup. Plus, great promo for people to rediscover the new Ford.

abubnic: $ZIP / $F partnership w/ college students is brilliant. Cost saving sol'n for cash-strapped parents. Could lead to brand loyalty later on. To top of page
