Gap recently tapped Murphy, a Canadian drugstore man, to take a crack at reviving the moribund chain. Like Paul Pressler, the previous CEO, Murphy has experience turning around retail stores, but has no fashion background. Gap has already turned in some nice results: It surprised Wall Street with a 19% rise in profits in the second quarter.
