Retirement: Extend your pension
If you'll receive a pension when you retire, take the joint and survivor benefit (the default option) rather than switching to a single-payer plan. Yes, your monthly checks will be smaller, but you'll be protecting your spouse, who'd otherwise lose that income if you die before she does.
