When economic times got tough from higher food and gas prices, shoppers flocked to this discount chain for items $1 or less. Customers spent more and foot traffic rose as Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, VA, spruced up stores and added frozen and refrigerated food sections to more of them.

In May, shares got a boost after a Jefferies analyst raised his share price target, saying consumers will seek cheaper groceries and household items as gas prices rise. For the full year, the company saw earnings rise by 23% to $488.3 million or $4.03 per share.
