Christie's contemporary art sale held this week in New York was the most expensive single auction in history, raking in $745 million.
Francis Bacon made headlines last year when his work, "Three Slides of Lucian Freud," became the most expensive painting ever sold at auction, selling for a whopping $142.4 million.
This painting, a work featuring Bacon's partner John Edwards, didn't quite make it that high. The winning bid came from Xin Li, Christie's Deputy Chairman in Asia, who bid on behalf of a phone bidder. The buyer, located in Asia, remains anonymous.
Bidders from 35 countries were competing for ownership of the various works, according to the auction house. Christie's said on its website that the international interest demonstrates "the growing appetite for contemporary art across the global marketplace."
