Biggest pay raises over 30 years

Over the last generation, pay for some professions has risen much faster than the overall rate of inflation.

  • 1983 median wage: $9,932*
  • 2012 median wage: $27,144
  • Increase: 173%

The rise in salary for hotel clerks mirrors the rise of the travel and tourism industry in general.

Since 1982, hotel revenues went from $29 billion a year to $156 billion -- a gain of 438%, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

And some of the biggest growth has been in high cost areas: Cities and other tourist hot spots where wages are high.
