The rise in salary for hotel clerks mirrors the rise of the travel and tourism industry in general.
Since 1982, hotel revenues went from $29 billion a year to $156 billion -- a gain of 438%, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association.
And some of the biggest growth has been in high cost areas: Cities and other tourist hot spots where wages are high.
