As many as 140,000 miners went on strike in the biggest industrial dispute since the 1920s.

Fed up with the chaos, Britain elected Margaret Thatcher as prime minister in 1979.

She fought the powerful labor unions -- most famously facing down the miners in a bitter strike in the middle of the 1980s -- and slashed financial regulation, and taxes.

Markets took off and bankers partied hard. Consumers cheered. British Airways and BT were privatized, and Rupert Murdoch launched satellite TV service Sky.
